Women in Combat
Lamar Payne
Should Women Be Allowed in Combat?
In 1994 the Combat Exclusion Policy was created to prevent women from participating in missions and combat. It wasn’t until nineteen years later in 2013 after a lawsuit was filed by the ACLU against the Pentagon, and experiments were conducted by the Marines and Army that led to the uplifting of the ban. Since the lifting of the ban the question everybody is asking is should women be allowed in combat? The answer is yes. Women should be allowed in combat because, women bring more ideas and creative thinking, they serve for a common goal just like the men, it gives women a chance for equal opportunities, and the third reason is because they serve due to patriotic duty.
One of the excuses or opposing arguments is that women aren’t strong enough to be in combat or that men are stronger than women. That is not always the case. While there may still be some physical aspects of the military, there is no denying that there has been a tremendous increase in critical thinking or tactics. That is where women come in. Ever since mankind men have been labeled as the leader or dominant force, but it is the women who excel in creativity, critical thinking and insight. Men often lack these qualities that the women possess. William Denn puts it this way “We need their (women in combat) creativity, insight and empathy, qualities often lacking in male-dominated units.” (Denn). The more diverse a group is, the more creative and critical thinking comes into play. Each person has their own way of thinking. For example, two men in the military must come up with a solution to a mission. They spend countless time trying to come up with a solution, so finally the women came along and gave them some insight and new creative ideas. The women are able to shed some light and look at the problem a different way than the first two people.
Some people argue that including women in combat will disrupt a brotherhood that the male soldiers have. It doesn’t matter if there is man or woman beside you, that is your teammate and each of them have a duty to perform which is to serve and protect your country. When people are working together and striving towards the same goal it doesn’t matter if their counterpart is a male or female. The inclusion of women will strengthen not only the military but also the camaraderie that soldiers have. “When we were given resupply and you’re given 2,000 rounds of machine-gun ammo, the last thing you’re caring about is whether or not your Ranger buddy is a man or a woman,” 2nd Lieutenant Michael Janowski said. “Because you’re not carrying all 2,000 rounds by yourself.” (Thompson). Men and women both have something in common. In today’s society men are considered loyal to their brother (other male friends), while women are considered to be loyal towards their female friends. Since this loyalty runs on both sides it will certainly mesh well when men and women soldiers work together.
Another reason why women should be allowed in combat is because it gives them a chance at equal opportunities. It’s 2019 which means that women are still fighting for equal opportunities. Women go to college and get secondary education just like men. The military is another way to help them pay for college. Before the ban was lifted women had to find another way to pay for college. While women can enter the military and join combat, they are unable to enhance their careers because of restrictions on certain positions. Due to the restrictions on combat, there were only so many stations and other parts of the military women could go to.
The final reason women should be allowed in combat is because they feel it is their patriotic duty to serve. It is not just men who feel that they can show their patriotism by serving, it is also the women. “Women serve for the same reasons as men, which ranges from patriotic duty, family tradition, money for college, or simply because it’s a steady paycheck in a poor economy.” (Biank). Biank goes on to say that women in the military are testing social views of traditional gender roles and norms.
In conclusion, women should be allowed in combat. The military will see improvements across the board and will see itself strengthen when they allow women to be in combat because women bring more ideas and creative thinking, they serve for a common goal just like the men, it gives women a chance for equal opportunities, and the third reason is because they serve due to patriotic duty.

Texting and Writing Skills
Brooke Coffman
Does Texting Damage or Help Writing Skills?
In 1973, we were introduced to the very first cell phone that offered 30 minutes of talk time. Over the years, cell phones have advanced tremendously. It is 2019 and we now have countless shapes and sizes. As said, “Text messaging or "texting" was only developed and released to the public in the mid-1990s. By 2009, …texting was the second most common way to use the technology to communicate, after speaking person-to-person” (Techwalla). Using short hand in texting, it has started to carry over to the way people are writing. Due to the constant use of short hand, the way people write is being affected negatively
In the earlier stages of cell phones, flip phones were introduced, and they allowed people to text by using the 1 through 9 buttons. In order to send a text, you would have to press the number with the letters you wanted to type until the letter would show up on the screen. In today’s world, iPhones are in existence with touchscreens and on the screen, there is a whole keyboard as you would find on a laptop. All you have to do is tap the letter you want and you type your messages that way. Especially during the flip phone days, short hand was a major thing. Due to the time it took to type a message and send it, people would shorten their words or even use a letter in place of a word, such as “u” instead of “you” and “r” instead of “are”.
In today’s world where social media is such a popular thing, of course just about everyone has an account on some form of social media. Especially on Facebook or Twitter, in order to add items to your account, you are to type a message to either send to someone or post to your wall. Within the space to type what you are wanting to say, you are limited to a specific number of characters that you can type. The limited number of characters one can use creates another opportunity for people to use short hand. Where people are constantly on their phones, practically addicted, there is always room for us to pick up habits.
To go along with social media creating way for people to short hand, taking notes in class is another way that people will use short hand. Using short hand while taking notes is more of a leeway to writing formal matters incorrectly. Where you are taking written notes, you are more likely to make a mistake while writing due to your brain thinking that you are still writing what you have been rather than starting a new piece in a more formal manner. It is common that you will be in a class trying to take notes and the teacher or professor is going faster than you can keep up so you will short hand your notes. Your next class you go into, you may have to do a short, in class writing. Where you just took notes, your brain is going to be accustomed to short handing, and unintentionally you will short hand in the rest of your writings.
As time goes on, the number of children that are getting cell phones at a young age is increasing and with increasing cell phone numbers, this is creating for another opportunity to open up for children to be exposed to short hand.
“With children’s increasing use of mobile phones, concerns have been raised about its influence on their literacy skills. One well-known feature of children’s text messages is that they do not always adhere to conventional written language rules and use a register that is called textese. In this register, children make use of phonetic replacements, such as ur instead of your and acronyms, such as lol and drop words. This has led to the assumption that characteristics of textese may leak into children’s general writing, ultimately resulting in language deterioration” (van Dijk et all 2019).
With continuous booming populations, misspellings in more formal settings of writing is becoming more of an issue because it is starting at such a young age. Children’s brains are still developing while they are young, so when they are exposed to short hand early in life, they are more likely to make it a habit and carry it over to their lives in the future in their writings. “Edutopia’s informal poll, for example, found 53% believe students are carrying over the writing habits they pick up through text messaging into school assignments” (InformEd). So, if we are to up the age on when we give our kids cell phones, then they will be less likely to develop more bad habits in their writings.
In the end, what it all comes down to is whether or not you are able to successfully transition from short handing your texts to formally writing. It isn’t necessarily that no one is capable of flipping a switch to when it is time to be formal and when it is not, but it is just that people are becoming lazier and too reliant on resources that are going to correct their spelling for them. When I was growing up, short hand was a big thing, so it was weird to fully spell out every word as if I were writing on paper. Even though I didn’t have a flip phone to where it was typical to get lazy because of all the pushing of the buttons just to get one letter, I was still too lazy to type out all of the words. As I have gotten older, I have dropped the short hand and actually spell out all of the words that I am trying to send. At the end of the day, even though I type just about the same as I do when I write, I still know when to be formal, especially in my writing. I am not going to be lazy and short hand when it is time to be serious when writing a paper or emailing one of my professors. Although the way I talk in my texts is different than my other forms of writing, I still am capable of keeping the two separated.

School Shootings

School shootings in the United States
There are many different school shootings that have happened all over the world . In 2018 alone, there were thirty-five people who lost their lives due to school shootings. With that being said, many childeren have lost their lives over something that could have been prevented. There are many things that can be done to prevent school shootings, but, two things that I believe that we as United States citizens could do to decrease the numbers of school shootings are: having better security, and getting access to assault weapons harder to get access too.
School shootings are one of the biggest problems in this country, there has been too many school shootings in the pasty years. Kids in schools and even grown ups are losing their lives because the wrong people are getting access too guns way too easy. There is plenty of research that backs up this statement. A recent study found that states with fewer school shootings had stricter background checks for weapons and ammunition purchases (Loria). Also, even though school shootings was the most common form of gun violence, there were still an average of one school shooting per year from 1966 to 2008 (Loria). Since 2013, there has nearly been 300 school shootings, and since 2018 there has been 18 school shootings (Beresin). Those numbers make the school system sound not safe or comfortable, the scary part is how often it's happening, it is like it is almost becoming normal in the united States. For that reason something has to be done about armed citizens just walking into schools firing their weapons. The most common counter argument for this is the mental health of school shooters. But in reality 20% of youth and adults in the United States have a mental illness. (Beresin). So if we blame mental illness for the school shootings, others who suffer from things like anxiety, learning disorders, and impulse disorders would have to lose their rights to bear arms as well (Beresin).
Also, banning assault weapons can help reduce school shootings. The Lautenberg amendment to the 1968 Gun Control Act disqualified people with a misdemeanor conviction from buying a gun (Loria). “Researchers found that gun murders of female intimate partners decreased by 17% as a result of the amendment (Loria).” Also when citizens of the United States were allowed to start buying firearms with high capacity magazines, the number of massacres in the United States increased (Loria). For that reason alone it sounds like the United States was better off and a lot more safe when there was a ban on assault weapons. My reasoning for saying this is because the number of gun massacres and massacre deaths has decreased by 37% and 43% after the 1994 ban on assault weapons (Loria). And after the ban expired in 2004, the number of massacres shot up by 183% and 239% (Loria). Those dramatic changes from the ban being in effect, and the ban not being in effect shows that the rate of massacres go down dramatically when there's a ban on these assault weapons. While it showed allowing these assault weapons made massacres worse in the United States. A counter argument for this is if people want to kill someone they would use another weapon if a gun is not available. But that is wrong because, taking away assault weapons would make a mass shooting more difficult, because trying to do a mass shooting with a knife or something else not a gun would make a mass shooting harder.
Finally, improving security is the first step to help prevent school shootings. Having a better security system in all schools across the United States would improve the safety of tremendously. Controlled access and immediate lockdown are a very good safety tool to use when it comes to school shootings. An example of controlled access and immediate lockdown was when a gunman in Northern California killed four people and injured ten more victim in a rampage at various locations( Guardian Booth). By the time the shooter got to Rancho Tehama Elementry School, he was not able to get into the main part of the school because of the controlled access (Guardian Booth). Even though a injury still happened to a student, the lockdown prevented a mass shooting from happening (Guardian Booth). Even though it is never good for a person to die in anyway, one person dying is better than multiple people dying.
There are many different ways that people believe will decrease the likelihood of school shootings. But I believe that improving security and getting rid of assault weapons can immediately stop this problem. With that being said, there cant be school shootings if there are no weapons available in the first place. Also, if security is highly enforced they will never have a chance of getting a weapon into a school. Gun control should be one of the main factors that come into consideration when it comes to decreasing the number of school shootings. Out of all other possible solutions, I believe that these two ways will be the most effective approach to decrease the number of school shootings, because what we are doing as a country is not good enough. We need to do this so innocent kids would stop losing their lives.
